What Is Lumecca? See How It Helps Improve Damaged Skin

Have you noticed more freckles on your nose? Is there sun damage along your chin? Age and exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage skin over time. But Facial32 Dental Esthetics has a solution — Lumecca!

What is Lumecca, and how can it help skin damage and skin conditions? You might be surprised at how simple this treatment is and how soon you can see results.

What Is Lumecca?

Lumecca is a light-based skin treatment system, sometimes called a photofacial treatment, that can reduce the appearance of brown spots, sun damage, and rosacea from your face and other body parts. It uses the most powerful Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL) currently available to treat skin lesions and blemishes.

Lumecca is commonly used to treat lesions and rosacea on the face, as well as hands, legs, neck, chest, and arms. It can be used to treat all parts of the body, but it’s mainly used to treat areas regularly exposed to the sun.

Lumecca can produce results as soon as after one session. Generally, patients see a reduction in the signs of aging in 1-3 sessions.

Lumecca IPL Facial vs. Traditional IPL Facial

How does Lumecca work? It works similarly to traditional IPL facial treatments by reducing the effects of UV damage. The light pulses pull out discolored cells from deep within the skin, as far down as the skin’s second layer, the dermis.

The light pulses damage these cells, causing them to dissolve. This reduces the appearance of damaged skin and restores an even tone and soft complexion.

This treatment differs from traditional IPL devices because it uses a more powerful light. This produces the same great results in fewer visits. Lumecca treatments often take only 1-3 visits to get results, whereas traditional IPL treatments may need up to 6-8 visits.

Patients often see a reduction in brown spots and sun damage within days of treatment. Spider veins can disappear within 1-2 weeks!

What Does Lumecca Treat?

Lumecca treats a variety of damage and spots that come from aging and years of sun damage. The older we get, the more prominent this damage can become. You can reduce the look of that damage and restore your skin to a more youthful appearance.

Lumecca treats these facial issues:

  • Age Spots (red/brown pigmentations)
  • Vascular Lesions
  • Spider Veins
  • Poikiloderma
  • Freckles
  • Sun Damage
  • Rosacea
  • Acne scars

How Long Does Lumecca Last?

Lumecca treatments take place about four weeks apart. That’s in part because it could take 1-2 weeks for the full effect of the treatment to appear, depending on the type of treatment you get.

Once your treatments are complete, you should keep those results for 6-12 months. While the original brown spots and sun damage may not reappear, other age spots and sun damage could show up during that time.

We recommend “maintenance” treatments once a year, depending on whether you have rosacea and how often you’re exposed to direct sunlight.

Is Lumecca Painful?

As the light pulses on your skin, you may feel a sensation like a rubber band snapping lightly against your skin. As the treatment continues, your skin may begin to feel warm. That should be the most discomfort you feel during Lumecca treatment.

The treatment area may be red like a sunburn for an hour or so, but it should fade quickly. Brown spots will change color within 24-48 hours; then, they will flake off within the next week. There may be some mild skin sensitivity for about a week after your treatment.

Benefits of Lumecca

Lumecca's benefits are impressive compared to other skin treatments, including traditional IPL treatments that take longer to achieve the same effects. It returns your skin to a more youthful appearance and even a more luminous one.

Most patients see a 50-75% reduction in the appearance of veins and a 70% or more reduction in brown spots, freckles, and sun damage.

Recovery time is minimal. It is relatively painless and doesn’t result in extended reddening of the skin like chemical peels or other treatments. Most patients can resume wearing makeup after only a few hours!

Side Effects of Lumecca

Lumecca side effects are rare, but you need to contact Facial32 Dental Esthetics right away if they happen. Side effects can include:

  • Painful skin

  • Crusty or scab-covered skin

Dos and Don’ts of Lumecca

There are a few things to remember when preparing to get Lumecca IPL photofacial treatment or any photo-facial treatment. You will need to protect your skin from direct sunlight and tanning before and after treatment.

  • Avoid tanning or direct sun exposure one month before treatment
  • Do not use self-tanning lotions or sprays one month before treatment
  • Do not use a tanning bed before or after treatment
  • Do not wear makeup, perfume, or scented products on the day of your treatment
  • Do wear makeup if you like after your treatment
  • Do stay out of direct sunlight and wear SPF 30 or better sunscreen outdoors
  • Do use a moisturizing lotion after treatment
  • Do wash with sensitive skin soap
