At Facial32 Dental Esthetics, we believe in women’s learning, growth, and connection. This month, it was our honor to participate in the Hanover YWCA’s 2023 Emerge Women’s Conference! We got to meet wonderful local women and learn together about everything from relational negotiation and financial well-being, to succulent gardening and interior design, to yoga and self-defense.
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we were also able to provide a smile makeover, worth approximately $50,000, to a domestic violence survivor.
We proudly support the Emerge Conference and all women building and rebuilding their lives.
The Emerge conference took place on October 13th, and included inspirational speakers, many of whom are local female entrepreneurs.
Emerge offered attendees lots of opportunities to build professional skills! We learned about professional relationships from Leigh-Ann Reitze, Teri Jakob, and the power of negotiation from Rebecca M. Shanaman, and Margaret “Mieke” Driscoll from CGA Law Firm. Nicole Shaffer of Traditions Bank taught the group about communication around money and making values-aligned financial decisions. Shannon McCleary, Rob Ginder, and Angela Faretta educated us about digital risk and mitigation strategies for small businesses, and Kathi Fuhrman of Fuhrman Creative LLC led a workshop on personal and business branding.
Emerge also provided opportunities to improve our physical and emotional well-being. Cindy Jeng of YogaLife Institute and Gloria Marcott of Soul Punch got us moving. Hypnotherapist and Mindset Coach Jennifer Riggs, and Tina Fortenberry, CEO of Willow River Coaching, taught techniques for creating and making the most of change. Katie Karnas of Phoenix Physical Therapy improved our posture, and Brooke Ingram, nurse and licensed acupuncturist, helped us understand why it’s so hard for women to sleep well and what we can do about it.
Steph Widdowson of , Marie Betlyon Smith of Schmitt’s Interiors, and Walt Graves improved our home know-how! Steph provided a workshop on succulent gardening, Walt walked us through door, toilet, and faucet repairs we can do ourselves, and Marie helped us think about interior design decision-making. It’s not as easy as it looks on HGTV!
Several presenters addressed personal and community challenges: Vikkie Glogg of BriteLife Recovery talked with us about substance use disorder, Dawn Bosley and Jessica Doll of Be The Change led a session on bullying and suicide awareness, and Dr. Angela Marick (Ange) worked with participants to consider our divine purpose– how our personal journey intersects with being a part of greater good in the world. We appreciate all of these difficult and important conversations.
The Emerge conference benefits the Hanover YWCA. This organization’s mission is to end racism and empower women through a variety of programs.
The YWCA supports women with young children through its Child Development Programs and licensed Child Care Programs. The Girls Loving Life program pairs young girls in grades 2-8 with girl mentors in grades 9-12. Other programs help women empower themselves to change and improve their lives.
The YWCA also supports domestic violence victims through its Safe Home domestic violence program, which provides various services. Safe Home offers free 24/7 services to domestic violence victims through temporary housing, therapy, safety planning,
The YWCA’s goal is to help women experiencing domestic violence to not only break away from this cycle of violence but also rebuild home lives that are safe, healthy, and independent. In addition to in-house programs, their advocates conduct educational programs throughout the community aimed at preventing domestic violence.
Facial32 Dental Esthetics supports the missions of the Emerge conference and the Hanover YWCA to help improve the lives of women who working to escape domestic violence. It’s a cause close to the heart of Dr. Diana Shoe, who has treated domestic violence victims who have lost or damaged teeth.
We asked Dr. Diana to share her perspective on domestic violence and cosmetic dentistry:
“In my dental career, I've encountered two heartbreaking instances of domestic violence where the victims suffered the loss of their front teeth due to the effects of abusive relationships. Importantly, it's crucial to emphasize that these cases were not a result of the victims' negligence but were direct consequences of the abusive situations they endured. One of these survivors endured this harrowing experience for an extended period.
When this survivor came to me, she was at a pivotal point in her life, working on rebuilding her life and seeking employment. She felt that job opportunities were slipping away due to her missing front teeth, which severely impacted her confidence.
After assisting her in replacing those missing teeth, her transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Her joy and newfound confidence were palpable, and her life took a positive turn as she secured a job just a week later. I was so happy to restore her smile and by doing this, it restored her self-esteem.
For me, it was a profound and gratifying experience to be able to restore her smile and with that her self-esteem. This story exemplifies the profound impact of a “smile makeover”. One that genuinely changes lives for the better.”
Facial32 Dental Esthetics is grateful to the Emerge Conference and to the YWCA of Hanover for this opportunity to contribute to their work with domestic violence survivors. We understand the value of confidence, and the many ways that violence can erode it. It’s our privilege to be able to help restore smiles, and to be a part of so many brighter tomorrows.
